The Ozarks

Table Rock Lake and its surrounding communities are located in the Ozarks, a 50,000 square mile region located chiefly in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas but also partially in Oklahoma and Kansas, between the Arkansas and Missouri Rivers.

This Ozark region is actually an eroded plateau containing more woodlands than farmland.  Much of the rock structure is sandstone and limestone. Created more than 350 million years ago by tectonic forces, rivers have gradually worn through the soft rocks creating steep-sided valleys and forming hundreds of caves and caverns. The Ozarks, which rise from the surrounding plains, are locally referred to as mountains and the various summits are called knobs.

The Ozarks have several large lakes that were created by dams across the White and Black rivers to generate electricity, control flooding and develop recreational opportunities. Table Rock Lake, formed in the late 1950’s by the construction of Table Rock dam, is among the largest.

Tough the area is rich in deciduous trees such as oak, hickory, maple, elder and elm, along with a few species of evergreens, the soils are relatively thin and of poor quality for agriculture. The Ozarks, however, are teeming with wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, quail, great-horned owls, great blue herons, woodpeckers and even bald eagles.

The Ozarks were originally home to several nomadic Indian tribes such as the Osage, Cherokee and Choctaw. Major Steven Long led the first American expedition through the Ozarks in 1817. Several notable Civil War battles were fought in the area, sometimes pitting brother against brother as families in the Ozarks often had divided loyalties between the North and South.

Vacationers were first attracted to the area following the publication of Harold Bell Wright’s novel, The Shepherd of the Hills in 1907. Because of its relatively isolated location, the Ozarks became known for the simple hand-crafted lifestyle and unique music of its people.

Today, more than seven million people each year visit Table Rock Lake and the greater Branson area to enjoy the natural beauty, wealth of outdoor activities, considerable shopping opportunities and wide variety of entertainment.
